Who we are

College Life: Study Assistant is made by Outwork LLC, the company behind College Life. This policy covers Study Assistant on the web and in the phone apps. College Life itself has its own policy, because it collects different things.

What we collect

Only what the product needs to work:

  • Your email address, because that is how you sign in. There is no password to store, and so none to lose.
  • A profile you choose: a username, a display name and a photograph if you add one. The username and display name are how a classmate finds you, so those two are visible to other students. Nothing else about you is.
  • What you upload. Slides, notes, readings, photographs of pages, and lecture recordings. We extract the text so we can build cards from it and cite the page or the moment they came from.
  • Notes you type while recording, kept with the recording they belong to.
  • What you make. Study sets, cards, tests, review history, highlights, and any courses or dates you add.
  • Messages and study rooms. Messages you send another student, and anything you post in a study room, including pictures.
  • Usage we are billed for. Token counts, transcription seconds and cost, per request. We record this to know whether the service is viable, and it is tied to your account so your own limits can be counted.
  • Subscription state from our payment provider, the App Store or Google Play: whether it is active, when it renews, and whether a trial has been used.

Lecture recordings

A recording is uploaded a minute at a time while you are still in the room, so a phone that dies partway through does not cost you the lecture. What has arrived is kept in your account.

The audio is transcribed on our own servers. It is not sent to an outside AI provider, and it is not sent anywhere else. When you then ask for cards, the text of the transcript is sent to the provider that writes them. The recording itself stays with us.

Delete a recording and its audio, its transcript, your notes on it and the cards built from it go with it.

Recording a class captures other people, and whether you may record is not ours to decide. That obligation is yours and it is set out in the terms.

What we do not do with your material

We do not train anything on it. Your uploads, recordings, transcripts, cards and questions are not used to train or improve any model, ours or anybody else's, and the provider that writes your cards is not permitted to train on what we send it.

Your uploads are private to your account. We do not pool them into a shared library, we do not show one student another student's material, and we do not build a searchable corpus out of what you upload. If you photograph a chapter of a textbook you own for your own study, that stays yours.

Who else sees it

  • An AI provider processes the text of a document when you ask for cards, a test or an answer. That is what generation is. Only the material needed for that request is sent, and it is not kept for training.
  • Our hosting provider stores the database and your files.
  • Our own transcription server turns lecture audio into text. It is ours, not a third party.
  • Our email provider delivers your sign-in link.
  • Our payment provider handles web payments. We never see or store your card number.
  • Apple or Google handle in-app purchases, and tell us only whether a subscription is valid.
  • Other students, but only what you send them: a message you write, a picture you post in a room, and the username and display name on your profile.

We do not sell the material you upload, and we do not share it for anybody else's advertising. Your documents, your recordings, your cards and what you ask Cam are never handed to an advertiser and are never used to decide which advertisement you see.

Advertising is coming to the free plan. Where ads appear they are served by an advertising network, which sets its own identifiers in your browser or app to decide what to show and to count what was shown. That is separate from your study material and has no access to it. Paid plans carry no advertising.

Cookies, and what we do not run

There is no analytics on this site. No Google Analytics, no product analytics, no advertising pixel, no session recorder, nothing that follows you between sites. The only cookie we set is the one that keeps you signed in, and clearing it signs you out. When advertising arrives on the free plan the network will set its own identifiers, and this paragraph will say so.

Keeping and deleting

Your material stays while your account does. Delete a document and its extracted text and the cards built from it go with it. Delete your account and everything tied to it is removed, apart from records we are required to keep for tax and accounting.

A message you have already sent another student stays in their conversation, the way a sent email does. Removing your own account removes your name from it.

Your rights

You can export or delete your material at any time from your account, and you can ask us for a copy of everything we hold about you, for a correction, or for the whole account to be erased. Write to us and a person will handle it. We do not charge for any of this and we do not treat you differently for asking.

If you are in California, the rights to know, to delete, to correct, and to opt out of sale or sharing are yours by law. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of, and we do not use or disclose sensitive personal information beyond what it takes to provide the service. Several other states give the same rights and we apply them to everyone rather than checking where you live.

Age

Study Assistant is built for college students and is not intended for children. Do not create an account if you are under 16. We do not knowingly collect anything from a child under 13; if we learn we have, we delete it. Where a parent buys a gift, the parent never creates an account for anyone else: they receive a code, and the student redeems it on an account they made themselves.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what happens to your material, we will say so on this page and tell you before it takes effect, not after.
