Who we are, and what this is

College Life: Study Assistant is made by Outwork LLC, the company behind College Life. Using it means agreeing to what is on this page.

Study Assistant turns material you upload into flashcards, tests and study scheduling. It is a study aid. It is not a tutor you can rely on to be correct, and it is not a substitute for your course material.

Recording a lecture

This is the one part of the product that involves people who are not our users, so read it before you press record.

• Getting permission is your responsibility. A recording captures your professor and the students around you. We have no way to ask them and we do not.
• Your institution's rules apply. Many require the instructor's permission before a class is recorded, and some prohibit it outright. Those rules bind you whatever this product allows.
• So does the law where you are. In a number of states everyone being recorded has to agree. We do not know where you are sitting or who is in the room, so we cannot make that judgement for you.
• A recording is for your own study. Do not publish it, sell it, or pass it to anyone who was not in the room.

If somebody tells us a recording was made of them without their agreement, we will take it down.

Academic honesty

You may not use Study Assistant to produce work you submit as your own, or to get answers during an exam, quiz or any proctored assessment. The assistant declines these requests and will offer to explain the approach instead. Your institution's rules apply to you whatever this product does, and breaking them is your responsibility.

What you upload, and what stays yours

You keep ownership of everything you upload. You give us permission to store it and process it for one purpose: providing this service to you. That permission is not perpetual and it is not exclusive. It ends when you delete the material or close your account.

We do not train models on your material, and we do not licence it to anyone who would. The cards, tests and answers made from your material are yours as well.

Upload only material you are allowed to. Photographing pages of a textbook you own for your own study is ordinarily fine. Uploading material you have no right to, or sharing copyrighted material with others through this product, is not, and we will remove it on a valid complaint.

How to behave here

Messages and study rooms put you in front of other students, so: nothing sexual, nothing violent, nothing that harasses somebody. Pictures posted in a room are visible to everyone in it, and the student who made the room can take any of them down. You can block somebody, and blocking stops them reaching you.

Do not scrape the service, script it, resell access to it, or use somebody else's account. Do not upload another person's private information.

Accuracy

Generated cards and answers cite the page and line they came from, and a card whose quotation cannot be found in the source is flagged rather than presented as fact. That reduces invention, it does not eliminate it. Check anything that matters against your own material. We do not warrant that generated content is correct.

Payment

• The trial runs 7 days on the web and takes no card. Nothing charges when it ends. One trial per person, across every platform.
• Monthly, $9.99. Cancel any time, in one tap.
• Semester, $29.99. Four months. Works out at $7.50 a month, and nothing renews over summer.
• Pro, $14.99. For recording every class. A hundred hours of lecture a month.
• The monthly plan renews until you cancel it. We email you before every charge, and the renewal date is shown in your account.
• The semester is a pass, not a plan. It is bought once, runs its four months, and stops. Nothing renews, and nothing is charged over the summer unless you ask for it.
• Cancel at any time, in one tap. You keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancellation happens in your store settings, because that is the only place it can.
• If you are charged for a period you have not used, write to us and we will refund it. We would rather give the money back than argue about whether you meant to renew.
• Prices can change. If they do we will tell you before it affects you, and you can cancel.

Your account

One account per person, and it is yours alone. Do not share sign-in links. We can suspend an account that is being used to break these terms, to abuse limits, or to distribute material that is not yours.

Age

You must be at least 16 to use Study Assistant.

Copyright complaints

If something here infringes your copyright, write to us through the contact form with enough detail to find it: what the work is, where it appears here, how to reach you, and a statement that you believe the use is not authorised. We remove infringing material and we end the accounts of people who make a habit of posting it.

Ending it

You can stop and delete your account whenever you like. We can end an account for the reasons above. If we end yours without cause, we refund the unused part of the period you paid for.

Liability

The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for a grade, an exam outcome or an academic decision.

Governing law

These terms are read under the law of Louisiana, where Outwork LLC is, without regard to its rules about which other law might apply. Anything that cannot be settled between us belongs in the state or federal courts of Louisiana, and we both agree to that.

Before it ever gets that far, write to us. Most things that look like a dispute are a misunderstanding about a charge or an account, and those are settled in an email. We answer, and a person reads it.

Changes

If these terms change in a way that affects what you may do or what we may do with your material, we will say so on this page and tell you before it takes effect.
